Plumber completing report for insurance after flood damage

Increased demand for plumber’s reports on insurance claims

The demand for Plumber’s Reports has drastically increased recently. Heavy flooding across much of eastern Australia, particularly easterly towns in New South Wales and southern Queensland, have created unprecedented demand for inspections in order to start the insurance claim process.

It can be difficult to know where to start if your home has been damaged by flood waters, so to give you some clarity on the first steps, let us run through what you should start by doing.

Why you’ll need a Plumber’s Report

In order for the insurance company to start evaluating your claim, it is important to obtain a full account of any damage to your property.

Based on how high floodwater rose on your land and the placement of your house, plumbing and electrical infrastructure, you may need to check some or all of the following:

  • Plumbing and sewerage
  • Electrical
  • Structural integrity

It is also worth drying your house as much as possible as soon as possible. While doing so, be on the lookout for mould which can cause health issues or increase the cost and complexity of your repairs.

The best way to check the soundness of your house is to bring in specialist trades to ensure everything is safe. In fact, if you will need to claim on your insurance, this will be a requirement.

A Plumbing Report will tell you if all your plumbing fittings have maintained integrity so that any issues are picked up now, rather than down the track. This helps to safeguard you and ensures that your insurance claim is as complete as possible.

It will also reveal any detectable issues with your sewerage system, giving you peace of mind that your property repairs are targeted and complete.

Flooded sewage system will be addressed in a plumbers report to the insurer

When to book in your Plumber’s Report

Book in your Plumber’s Report as soon as the flood event has passed and you can see that your property has been impacted. While tradies are going hard to get to everyone who requires assistance in these challenging times, there is still a lot of work to be done. The sooner you’ve secured your booking, the sooner you can tick off task one from your list.

Your insurer will be able to run you through what else you’ll need to do and what to expect as you move through the claims process.
